Is There a Difference Between a Medical and Aesthetic Rhinoplasty?

Did you know that there are two types of rhinoplasty procedures – and the type you pick can influence what concerns are addressed, your outcomes, and even if your insurance may pay for it? Rhinoplasty procedures are commonly divided into two categories: a medical rhinoplasty, and aesthetic rhinoplasty. Let’s take a look at what these procedures involve, including key differences between the two.

What is a Medical Rhinoplasty?

A medical rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to correct issues that may impact a patient’s ability to breathe normally through the nose. One of the most common issues that can be corrected with a medical rhinoplasty is a deviated septum, which is a condition where the central divider of the nose is off-center. Other reasons to opt for a medical rhinoplasty is if your nose has been injured, or if you’d like to correct nasal trauma that has been with you from birth or early childhood.

What is an Aesthetic Rhinoplasty?

Aesthetic rhinoplasty – more commonly referred to as a nose job – is a surgical procedure designed to correct more cosmetic issues, like having a bulbous nose, a hooked nose, and more. Aesthetic rhinoplasty is a popular treatment option for patients who may feel self-conscious about the appearance of their nose.

What are the Differences Between the Two?

The main difference between the two surgical procedures is the outcome that each is meant to produce. The medical rhinoplasty may focus more on addressing medical issues, while aesthetic rhinoplasty is designed to correct more cosmetic concerns. Another key difference is that your health insurance policy may cover the cost of a medical rhinoplasty; an aesthetic rhinoplasty usually isn’t covered.
