How is a Facelift Done?

Over time, our collagen production begins to slow down, causing our skin to lose its elasticity. When we lose elasticity, our skin tends to sag, making us look much older than we may feel. Facelift procedures may help correct these aging concerns. At The Pennsylvania Centre for Plastic Surgery, Dr. Brenman can use facelift techniques to improve the overall appearance of your face.

What is a Facelift (Rhytidectomy)?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that can take years off your face in just one session. Patients often choose to get a rhytidectomy to reverse multiple signs of aging on the face, such as deep wrinkles, creases, jowls, and sagging skin. A board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Brenman can examine your facial skin to see what improvements he can make to your face with facelift procedures.

How is a Facelift Performed?

During a facelift procedure, Dr. Brenman will use surgical techniques based on your treatment plan. Depending on your facelift goals, he may carefully place some incisions in more than one area, such as your hairline, above your ears, around your front ears, or behind your ears. Next, he may remove fat and excess skin, raise and pull back the skin, and tighten facial tissues and muscles to provide a more contoured face. Additionally, Dr. Brenman can perform a facelift in combination with a brow lift or eyelid lift, depending on your preferences. Patients may choose local or general anesthesia to ensure their comfort during the procedure. Rhytidectomy takes about three to six hours to complete. It may take longer if you decide to get multiple face procedures at the same time.

What Results Can I Expect From a Facelift?

Your facelift results may last up to 15 years. However, the longevity of your results depends on how well you protect your skin, your weight changes, and your lifestyle habits. We recommend you protect your skin from the sun by wearing sunscreen. Moreover, you should avoid smoking, and you should lead a healthy lifestyle with diet and exercise to maintain your results.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

Both healthy men and women may receive a facelift to achieve a more youthful-looking appearance with tighter facial skin. Although there is no “right age” to receive a facelift, many patients may benefit from this procedure when they have visible signs of aging. Patients in their 40s or early 50s may see longer-lasting results. To determine if rhytidectomy is right for you, schedule a consultation with board-certified Dr. Brenman.
