What are Dermal Fillers Used For?

Whether you want to smooth wrinkles or add natural-looking volume, dermal fillers can help. These injectable products can address facial concerns, including lines, wrinkles, thin lips, and lack of cheek definition. An expert injector can use dermal fillers to sculpt and smooth your features to achieve your desired look.

What are Juvederm® Dermal Fillers?

At The Pennsylvania Centre for Plastic Surgery, we offer the Juvederm® family of dermal fillers. These dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid to enhance your facial volume. Hyaluronic acid, a large sugar molecule, can form chains and cross-links that give each Juvederm® formula unique properties.    Dermal Fillers

What are Dermal Fillers Used For?

Juvederm® dermal fillers have a variety of uses. While many think of dermal fillers for treating wrinkles, they also offer a highly effective way to contour and define your features. Your expert injector can use Juvederm® for:
  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Marionette lines (creases around the mouth)
  • Nasolabial folds (creases between nose and mouth)
  • Fine lines around the lips
  • Lips that look thin
  • Loss of mid-face volume
  • Lack of cheek definition
Dermal fillers used for the cheeks tend to be the densest and most resilient, while those used for the lips have the softest, most flexible texture. Those used for lines and wrinkles often fall between these two.

How Long Do Juvederm® Dermal Fillers Last?

How long your dermal filler lasts depends on the filler type, the injection area, and your body’s reaction. Most Juvederm® dermal fillers last from six to eighteen months. Those used for the cheek area may last up to two years under certain circumstances. Lip fillers tend to have the least longevity due to their flexible formula and the constant motion of the lips. Each person’s body metabolizes the filler differently, and if you choose to have dermal fillers regularly, you will learn how often you can expect to need a touch-up.

Do I Need Dermal Fillers or Botox®?

You may have heard dermal fillers mentioned along with other injectable treatments called neurotoxins. Botox®, like dermal fillers, is an injectable treatment that can reduce lines and wrinkles. However, Botox® treats different types of wrinkles. While dermal fillers work on wrinkles caused by volume loss and skin laxity, Botox® works on lines that form from facial expressions. Many people have dermal fillers and Botox® simultaneously.

Is There Any Downtime With Dermal Fillers?

There is no downtime after dermal filler injections. You can return to your usual activities immediately. Your dermal filler results will become visible almost immediately after treatment. They may continue to settle over the next few days. Some people notice minor spots of bruising or swelling, but these usually resolve within days. Since the body recognizes hyaluronic acid, reactions to this filler material are rare.
