Breast Augmentation, Lift, and Reduction: What are the Differences?

Dr. Brenman offers three different breast surgery options to suit his patient’s needs and goals. Each one caters to specific concerns you may have, meaning one of the options could suit you far better than the others. The three options for breast surgery are breast augmentation, lift, and reduction. Each of these procedures differs from the other in their purpose, the steps taken during treatment, and the recovery period.

 Purpose

The purpose of breast augmentation surgery is to change the size of your breasts. Dr. Brenman often refers to it as volume addition surgery, purely because that’s all you’re doing – adding more volume to your breasts, in the form of implants.

On the other hand, a breast lift won’t alter the size of your breasts, but it does change their shape. The idea is that they are lifted up and made rounder and perkier, making your breasts look more youthful. They’re highly popular in older women or women who have been pregnant, and their breasts have started to sag.

By contrast, breast reduction surgery is the opposite of breast augmentation. This is where your breasts are reduced in volume, making them a smaller size. It’s ideal for patients who have extremely large breasts that might cause chronic back/neck pain or make it hard for you to wear certain clothes.

Procedure

The breast augmentation procedure consists of a few incisions, followed by the insertions of implants. Dr. Brenman makes your incisions in places that are hard for people to spot, making your breasts look as natural as possible. Once the implant is inserted, he will close up the incisions with sutures that are absorbed under the skin.

With a breast lift, the procedure is very different. Here, incisions are made to then remove excess skin and fat. In turn, this increases the tightness of the breast tissues, making your breasts look more lifted and raised. This offers a much more youthful and perky breast shape.

Finally, breast reduction surgery is performed by making incisions that can be used to remove the excess glandular breast and fatty tissue. The breasts are then reshaped, with the nipples sometimes repositioned for a more natural look.

Recovery

The recovery period for all three surgeries is actually rather similar. You will need someone to come and take you home afterward, and you are given a special surgical bra as protection. For all three options, sexual activity should be avoided in the ten days following the surgery. You can usually get back to work and light activities after a week or so, with 4-6 weeks recommended before partaking in any rigorous exercise.

Benefits of Breast Surgery

All three types of breast surgery can be highly beneficial for anyone that’s suffering from confidence issues. You may not like the way your breasts look – be it their size or shape – in which case, breast surgery can help you achieve the breasts you’ve always hoped for.

Additionally, breast reduction surgery is remarkably beneficial if your breasts are big enough that they cause physical aches and pains. Your life can be much easier and less painful when you have smaller breasts.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Surgery?

Dr. Brenman recommends breast surgery for women who have already gone through puberty. If this is the case, you are an ideal candidate if you want to increase/decrease the size of your breasts, or improve the way they look. Make sure you have realistic expectations beforehand and feel free to talk to Dr. Brenman if you’re unsure which surgery will suit you best.

“After losing 87 pounds I decided I would treat myself and get a tummy tuck that I have been wanting for some time. I researched and thought Dr Scot Brenman would be best. Well suffice it to say I am not thrilled with my results. Ultimately my tummy is flatter which was what I wanted but my belly button is 2 inches above the incision line which I hate! He promised lipo which til this day I’m betting he didn’t do! Also his aftercare was thee WORSE! He never followed up with me after the removal of my drains! No way will he receive another one of my hard earned dimes!” *

This visit was a pleasure! Dr. Brenman thoroughly explained my options and did seem rushed. He answered all my questions and made me comfortable with making my decision. Gina was friendly and helpful in facilitating scheduling etc. I feel confident in my choice.
