Am I a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?

Gynecomastia, the enlargement of male breasts, affects most men at some point in their lives, often during puberty. Male breast reduction can remove the excess tissue and give you a flatter, more masculine chest. If self-consciousness about your gynecomastia keeps you from enjoying life to the fullest, male breast reduction can help you restore your confidence.

What is Male Breast Reduction for Gynecomastia?

Male breast reduction, or gynecomastia surgery, removes excess fat and breast tissue to decrease the appearance of male breasts. Causes of gynecomastia include hormones, genetics, weight gain, and some medications. Enlarged male breasts typically contain fat and glandular breast tissue. The procedure to remove gynecomastia only requires a few small incisions and can give you a chest you feel more comfortable with.

Am I a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction? You may make a good candidate for male breast reduction if your enlarged male breasts bother you or make you feel uncomfortable. Ideal candidates do not smoke and have no health problems that would affect healing after surgery. Candidates should have reasonable expectations and a positive outlook.

How Does Male Breast Reduction Treat Gynecomastia?

Your male breast reduction surgery takes place under sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Brenman uses small incisions to perform liposuction on the enlarged breasts, removing fat from the chest. Glandular breast tissue, if present, is removed through a a fine line incision usually made around the lower half of the areola. Dr. Brenman will continue to sculpt each side until your chest achieves a flatter, more masculine shape.

What is Recovery Like From Male Breast Reduction

You will have a compression garment to wear after surgery to protect and support your chest while it heals. You will notice swelling and soreness that decrease after a few days. Most people can go back to work within three to five days. However, you will need to avoid strenuous activities for two to three weeks. Swelling will continue to improve over the following weeks. Dr. Brenman will provide detailed instructions to follow after surgery.

What Results Will I See With Male Breast Reduction?

You will see a flatter chest right after surgery, but your final results will take up to six months to develop as the swelling resolves. Your chest will look smoother and more masculine, letting you wear more fitted shirts or go without a shirt more confidently.  When Dr. Brenman removes fat and breast tissue using liposuction, the tissue removed does not grow back. As long as you maintain a consistent weight, your results can last a lifetime. Liposuction does not remove all the fat cells since that would leave you with a caved-in chest, and the remaining fat cells can expand if you gain weight.
This visit was a pleasure! Dr. Brenman thoroughly explained my options and did seem rushed. He answered all my questions and made me comfortable with making my decision. Gina was friendly and helpful in facilitating scheduling etc. I feel confident in my choice.
