Can I Work Out After I Surgically Remove Man Boobs?

Do you feel self-conscious about the appearance of your chest, to the point where you feel self-conscious about wearing tighter shirts? Do you suffer from enhanced male breasts, more commonly referred to as “man boobs”? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you may be a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery. This popular cosmetic procedure removes excess glandular tissue from the chest, which is often the cause of man boobs. Extra liposuction can be used to further flatten and sculpt the chest, leaving behind a more traditionally masculine appearance. But how long does recovering take? And can you work out after surgically removing man boobs?

Working Out After Your Gynecomastia Surgery

You’ll be restricted from exercising for about four to six weeks after your gynecomastia surgery. That’s because working out after major surgery can put your recovery at risk, as it may interfere with how your stitches heal. While you’ll be prevented from working out after surgery, your plastic surgeon may green light you for gentle walks about one to two weeks into your recovery process.

Recovering from Your Gynecomastia Surgery

To have the most successful recovery from your gynecomastia surgery, it’s important to follow your plastic surgeon’s recommendations and instructions. That may include:
  • Taking at least one week off from work (you may need to take two weeks if you have a more manual job)
  • Avoiding smoking and aspirin
  • Drinking plenty of water and getting lots of rest
  • Sleeping on your back
  • Wearing a compression garment for two to three weeks to help reduce post-procedural swelling
Your plastic surgeon will work with you to come up with a tailored recovery plan.
