How Long is Recovery After Blepharoplasty?

As time goes by, you may notice your eyelids begin to droop. Excess skin, puffiness, and wrinkles around the eyes are common signs of aging that can make you look tired or angry. Dr. Scott Brenman specializes in upper and lower blepharoplasty to restore bright, youthful eyes.

What is Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the appearance of the eyelids. This surgery can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids or both, depending on the patient’s needs. The procedure involves removing excess skin and fat from the eyelids, resulting in a more youthful, refreshed appearance. Eyelid surgery can often be performed under local anesthesia, though general anesthesia may be used if it’s combined with other procedures such as a facelift. Dr. Brenman will make incisions within the natural creases of the eyelid or under the lower lashes. He will then remove or tighten skin, muscle, and fat to create a smoother, lifted appearance.

What is Recovery Like After Blepharoplasty?

The recovery time for blepharoplasty varies depending on the extent of the surgery and the individual patient’s healing process. You should expect bruising, swelling, and some discomfort for the first week or so after eyelid surgery. Dr. Brenman will instruct you on how to manage discomfort with pain medication and cold compresses. Keeping your head elevated for the first few days after surgery can help minimize swelling. Patients can usually return to work and normal activities within a week. You may need to wait two weeks or more to resume strenuous activities. If you wear contact lenses, you won’t be able to wear them for a week or two after blepharoplasty. Full recovery from blepharoplasty can take several weeks.

Results of Blepharoplasty

The results of blepharoplasty typically become visible after a few weeks as the worst of the swelling and bruising fades. You’ll see the full results of blepharoplasty when all swelling subsides in approximately six months.  The results of blepharoplasty are long-lasting, and patients can expect to enjoy the benefits of the surgery for many years. An upper eyelid lift typically lasts five to seven years, while the results of a lower eyelid lift can last a lifetime.

Am I a Good Candidate for an Eyelid Lift?

Candidates for blepharoplasty should be in good health and have realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure. Ideal candidates for eyelid surgery are individuals who have:
  • Excess skin and fat around the eyelids
  • Sagging or droopy eyelids
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Impaired vision due to excess skin on the upper eyelids
Patients with certain medical conditions, such as thyroid problems or diabetes, may not be good candidates for the surgery. During your consultation, Dr. Brenman will assess your eyes and discuss your goals to help you determine if blepharoplasty is right for you.
Perfect – no pain during and two hours after anesthesia wore off, I had no discomfort whatsoever. Less than one week afterwards, all swelling & redness had gone away. Now my eyelids don’t throw a shadow on my vision. Excellent! Thank you Dr. Brenman.*
