What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck lifts and rearranges the abdominal skin, removing excess skin and fat to produce a slimmer, flatter abdomen. At the same time, Dr. Brenman will tighten the abdominal muscles that often become loose with pregnancy or weight gain. A tummy tuck can use liposuction to sculpt, shape, and remove fat around the abdominal area, sides, and other areas to achieve a smoother stomach.

Am I a Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

If the appearance of your abdomen bothers you and a healthy lifestyle has not corrected the problem, you may be a good candidate for a tummy tuck. Common candidates include women after pregnancy and people who have lost weight and have a large amount of extra skin. These people may have trouble achieving a flat stomach because the abdominal muscles have loosened. By tightening these muscles, Dr. Brenman restores abdominal firmness.  Candidates should be in good health and maintain a stable weight. Dramatic weight changes will alter and possibly undo your results. You should also have reasonable expectations about the procedure. Dr. Brenman will discuss this during your consultation, including the appearance of the scar and other details, to help make sure this procedure will give you the best results.

How Does a Tummy Tuck Work?

During a tummy tuck, Dr. Brenman will make an incision on the lower abdomen where you can hide it with even just a bikini. The skin is pulled toward the incision, and loose skin is removed. Dr. Brenman may also use liposuction to remove excess fat and help improve the contours of the area. He will tighten stretched, loosened abdominal muscle, resulting in a firmer, more sculpted abdomen.

What Results Will I See From a Tummy Tuck?

You will see significant improvements from your tummy tuck. You will notice that your abdomen looks flatter, tighter, and smoother. Stretch marks and loose skin have been removed, and your loose abdominal muscles now support your entire torso as they should. While you will see results immediately after surgery, you will need to wait anywhere from six months to a year for your complete results to become visible.

What is Recovery Like From a Tummy Tuck?

After surgery, a compression bandage will help you control swelling and hold everything in place. You will have the most soreness and need some assistance with activities during the first few days. You will need to take at least two to three weeks off from work. Dr. Brenman will assess your healing and give you permission to resume normal activities between four and six weeks.
