What is Botox® Made Of?

Wrinkles and signs of aging are a shared frustration for all of us. That’s why Botox® is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, offering an effective treatment to turn back the clock on your face and help you look as young as you feel.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is an FDA-approved, non-invasive treatment for fine lines and wrinkles. Though primarily a cosmetic procedure, it is also sometimes used to treat certain medical conditions, such as severe underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis), chronic migraine, overactive bladder, and misaligned eyes (strabismus).

Botox® is the brand name for an injectable drug made from botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In small doses, this toxin blocks signals between the brain and nerve endings, temporarily paralyzing the corresponding muscles and preventing contractions.

How Does Botox® Work?

Repetitive muscle movements in the face eventually lead to wrinkles and lines. Your facial expressions gradually leave permanent furrows, such as frown lines and crow’s feet.

The neurotoxin in Botox® reduces these repetitive movements and relaxes the muscles in your face. This has an anti-aging effect that smooths your complexion and lessens lines and wrinkles. When administered in the correct dosage by a professional, Botox® is completely safe.

Botox® Treatment

Botox® treatments are fast, convenient, and effective. A session typically takes only 30 minutes. Your provider will use a small needle to make multiple injections in targeted muscles.

You may experience mild redness or swelling, but this should subside within 24 hours. Botox® doesn’t require any downtime, though you should avoid strenuous activities for the first day after treatment.

Botox® Results

Botox® is considered one of the best treatments for lines and wrinkles. It is most effective on wrinkles caused by repetitive expressions such as squinting and frowning, including forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. You can expect a smoother complexion, diminished wrinkles, and a more youthful appearance.

You will begin noticing results within a few days of treatment. These improvements usually last three or four months, and a few treatments a year are recommended to maintain your younger, more refreshed face.

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox®?

Almost anyone is a good candidate for Botox®. If you want a safe, non-invasive anti-aging treatment to improve mild-to-moderate wrinkles and revive your appearance, Botox® may be the answer.

Dr. Brenman does not recommend Botox® for patients that are pregnant or nursing, have a neurological disorder, or are under the age of 18.
