What Is a Tummy Tuck?

Abdominoplasty (also known as a tummy tuck) describes a surgical treatment designed to help remove stubborn stomach fat and repair abdominal wall muscles that may have been damaged by pregnancy, extreme weight loss, or just by getting older. Lax skin with stretch marks is also improved with this procedure. An abdominoplasty is usually performed in conjunction with liposuction to help highlight your newly contoured results.

Candidates for Abdominal Contouring

The best candidates for abdominal contouring surgeries are healthy individuals with realistic expectations for their outcomes. These candidates should already follow a healthy lifestyle but have difficulty losing stubborn fat or loose skin on the stomach and waistline areas.

How Does It Work?

For the tummy tuck procedure, Dr. Brenman will skillfully remove excess fatty tissue and stretched skin, creating a thinner, more contoured abdomen. He will tighten stretched, flaccid abdominal muscles, to reveal a smoother, tighter and more toned midsection.

For procedures that focus on fat removal, Dr. Brenman will make a small incision at the treatment site. He’ll feed a cannula through the incision to the pockets of fat; he’ll break up the fat tissue and drain it with the liposuction cannula.

Results*

Most patients can see improvement immediately after their procedures; however, final results may not be visible for another six months to a year. This is because the body is often still healing after major abdominal surgery.

Recovery*

You may need to take 2-3 weeks or more off from work, particularly if you engage in more manual work. You’ll be prevented from lifting heavy objects for your first four weeks of recovery, as this could damage abdominal walls. You may resume normal physical activities within 4-6 weeks after the surgery, based on Dr. Brenman’s assessment and feedback.
