Breast Lift

If you’re unhappy with the appearance of your breasts because they’ve lost volume due to weight loss, breastfeeding, or the aging process, you may be a good candidate for a breast lift. Also known as a mastopexy, this surgical procedure corrects drooping and restores the position of the nipple to reflect a more youthful and perky bust. At The Pennsylvania Centre for Plastic Surgery in Philadelphia and Plymouth Meeting, PA, our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Scott A. Brenman specializes in breast lift procedures for women who want to restore the appearance of their bustline without necessarily creating additional volume (breast augmentation).

What is a Breast Lift?

Mastopexy, also commonly referred to as a breast lift, is a procedure that can bring back your youthful figure by correcting sagging breasts or loss of firmness and volume. A woman’s breast can sag as a result of age, pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss. A breast lift will improve the appearance of your breast in many ways. The procedure reconstructs the breast in such a way that excess fat and skin are removed, thus tightening the tissues of the breast, giving it a lifted appearance, which restores the breast appearance back to that of your pre-pregnancy, youthful breast shape.

Candidates for a Breast Lift

You may be a good candidate for a breast lift if you have excessively sagging breasts or have lost considerable volume after breastfeeding or losing weight. You should be done with breastfeeding for at least six months and not planning on having another child for the foreseeable future. Most candidates for a breast lift usually find that their nipples point downwards, rather than straight out. There is usually loss of volume in the upper part of the breast, with most volume resting below the infra-mammary crease.

All breast lift candidates should be healthy non-smokers with realistic expectations for their procedure.

How Does It Work?

The breast lift is performed by removing excess sagging skin from the breasts, as well as repositioning the nipple to reflect a more youthful appearance. Incisions are usually made around the nipples, as this allows your plastic surgeon to reposition the nipple for a perkier look. Other incisions, if needed, will be fully described by Dr. Brenman.

Some patients who want a breast lift may also choose to add volume with an implant. Sometimes this is done at the same time as a breast lift, sometimes it is done as a secondary procedure. All options will be discussed with you by Dr. Scott Brenman.

Results*

Results start to become visible within a few weeks, although final results usually aren’t seen until six months or longer. Results can last for many years, depending on the patient’s rate of aging and weight fluctuation.

Recovery*

As breast lift procedures are generally performed as an outpatient procedure it is necessary to arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and stay with you, at least the first night following the procedure. You’ll need to wear a special garment for the first few weeks after the surgery, which helps your breasts maintain their new shape while minimizing swelling and bruising. Most patients are able to return to work after a week or so (you may need to take more time off if you work a more manual job). Normal fitness activities can be resumed after four to six weeks, depending on Dr. Brenman’s approval.
