Breast Augmentation

Many women choose to have their breasts enlarged in order to satisfy their own desire for a fuller bust line. Your breasts may not have developed to the size that meets your expectations or one breast may be significantly smaller than the other. You may have been happy with your breasts in the past but feel they look different now. Often, after weight loss, childbirth, or as a result of aging, the breasts lose volume and their shape changes.

Breast augmentation can enhance your breast size and shape and give you the more proportional figure you always wanted. At The Pennsylvania Centre for Plastic Surgery in Philadelphia and Plymouth Meeting, PA, our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Scott A. Brenman specializes in breast augmentation with both silicone and saline implants, as well as endoscopic breast augmentation. Three- dimensional computer imaging and simulation is used to help accurately determine the best implant size.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure in which silicone or saline implants are used to increase the size and volume of the breasts. Breast augmentation can be performed from a purely aesthetic standpoint, or it can be done to correct breast malformations. No matter what, the goal of any breast augmentation is the same – to help the patient feel happy and confident with her results.

Candidates for Breast Augmentation

If you wonder if you are a good candidate for breast augmentation there are many conditions which may indicate that you are. Most commonly, if you are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too small or that clothing fits well around your hips but is often too large in the bust line this procedure may be appropriate for you. You may feel self-conscious wearing a swimsuit, a form fitted top, or feel that your breasts have become smaller and lost their firmness after having children. Weight loss often changes the size and shape of the breast and asymmetries may become more apparent.

All breast augmentation candidates should be healthy non-smokers with realistic expectations for their procedure.

How Does It Work?

The breast augmentation procedure is straightforward; however, your incisions may be made at different places, depending on your specific treatment. In general, you can expect incisions to be made around the nipples, underneath the breast, and/or in the armpit region (endoscopic breast augmentation). Once the incisions have been made, Dr. Brenman will place the predetermined implants underneath the chest muscle and, if necessary, reposition the nipple to accommodate the new breast size. The procedure ends when the incisions are closed with absorbable surgical sutures under the skin.

Vectra 3D Imaging

Pennsylvania Centre for Plastic Surgery proudly offers Vectra 3D imaging for patients considering a breast augmentation procedure. This incredible imaging system allows you to see the possibilities of the procedure before the surgery itself. The Vectra 3D Imaging System will scan your body and display an image of your current breasts. When your measurements are put into the system, a 3D visual of the expected surgery results will be created.* You can see an example of the software simulated results compared to actual results below.

The final results of breast augmentation will be apparent within several months following your surgery. The most important thing you’ll notice is that breast augmentation will make your breasts look fuller and enhance their shape. You will find it easier to wear certain styles of clothing and like many women who have had breast augmentation, it may boost your self-confidence. These results are expected to be long-lasting, but with the exception of age-related changes in the breast causing some drooping, which may lead to additional surgery in the future.

As breast augmentation is generally performed as an outpatient procedure it is necessary to arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and stay with you, at least the first night following the procedure. Your surgery will be performed in a fully accredited outpatient facility or in a hospital as an outpatient. This surgery is generally performed under general anesthesia taking approximately 1½ hours in time, with another 1-2 hours spent in the recovery room. You will go home wearing a surgical bra with some padding that you can take off the following day to shower and then replace with a comfortable sports bra. Generally, all sutures in the 1-2 inch long incisions dissolve underneath the skin with no significant care required.

After breast augmentation, most women return to work or light activities within a few days or up to a week, depending on their job. Vigorous activities, especially ones involving arm movement may be restricted to 2-3 weeks. Sexual activity should be avoided for at least the first week following surgery. After that, care must be taken to be extremely gentle with your breasts for at least the next month.
