Can a Nose Job Fix Breathing Issues?

Do you have trouble breathing through your nose? Do you find it difficult to get a full night’s sleep due to sleep apnea or a deviated septum? If that’s the case, you may be a good candidate for a nose job, as this cosmetic procedure can help fix some of your biggest breathing issues.

How a Nose Job Fixes Breathing Issues

When people first think of a nose job, they often picture how the surgery can help correct cosmetic issues, like a bumpy nasal bridge or a too-large nose. In addition to these benefits, a nose job can fix breathing issues that may be associated with too-small nasal cavities, a deviated septum, or just having a long, narrow nose. If you’ve experienced any of these issues, a nose job can help correct the source of the problem, thus fixing your breathing issues. For example, if you have trouble breathing while working out because your nasal cavities are too small, a plastic surgeon can widen the nasal passages, making it easier for air to flow in and out of your nose.

When Will I Be Able to Breathe Better?

Unfortunately, you may experience some stuffiness and congestion immediately after your rhinoplasty procedure. For that reason, we recommend waiting about two to three weeks before anticipating better breathing. Once your post-procedural swelling has gone down, you’ll begin to notice that it’s easier to breathe through your nose. If you were previously diagnosed with sleep apnea, you may start to notice more restful sleeping, as you’re not constantly waking up trying to catch your breath. Total recovery from a rhinoplasty procedure can take six to twelve months, but you should see your breathing issues resolved about one to two months after your surgery.
