What Is a Body Lift?

A body lift is a plastic surgery procedure that is designed to remove excess, sagging skin from a person’s legs, arms, stomach, and more. The body lift makes it possible for a person who has recently lost a significant amount of weight to enjoy his or her results without feeling self-conscious about excess skin. Some insurance companies may even cover part of the costs of a body lift, as excess skin can increase a person’s risk for rashes, infection, and other skin conditions.

Candidates for a Body Lift

The ideal candidates for a body lift are people who have recently lost a significant amount of weight and are now having issues with skin laxity and firmness. Candidates should be healthy non-smokers who have realistic expectations for the procedure’s outcomes.

How Does It Work?

The body lift surgery can take about one to three hours to perform, depending on how much skin needs to be removed. During the procedure, Dr. Brenman will make incisions throughout the body which will allow him to remove sagging skin. After the skin has been removed, the incisions will be closed up in a way to minimize the appearance of surgical scarring.

Results*

Results are immediately visible, although patients will see a lot of swelling and bruising around the incision points. Most patients can expect their final results to start appearing around the sixth month, although these results may not be fully realized until a year after surgery.

Recovery*

During the recovery period, patients may need to wear some compression garments to help reduce swelling. You may need to take 1-2 weeks off of work, depending on what you do for a living. You should refrain from intensive exercise for at least 4 weeks, depending on Dr. Brenman’s advice.
