What is an Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure specifically designed to correct the size and shape of a person’s ears. Some people may have been born with deformed or misshapen ears; others may have developed malformed ears due to injury. Other patients may even feel as though their ears are too large or aren’t aligned with their facial features. Otoplasty helps correct these concerns by removing cartilage and reshaping the ears to the patient’s desired results.

Candidates for an Otoplasty

The ideal candidates for otoplasty are patients who feel self-conscious about the appearance of malformed or misshapen ears. This procedure is ideal for all ages, although many people prefer to have this procedure performed at a younger age. Candidates should be healthy non-smokers who have realistic expectations for the procedure’s outcomes.

How Does It Work?

The otoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. During the procedure, Dr. Brenman will remove skin, cartilage, and some parts of the earlobe, depending on the ideal size and shape you’re looking for. The incisions will be placed behind the earlobe when possible, as this can help you find post-surgical scarring.

Results*

Results are immediately visible, although you won’t see the final shape of your new ears until about a year after surgery due to swelling and bruising.

Recovery*

During the recovery period, you will need to wear special compression headwear to maintain the new shape of the ears, as well as reduce swelling. You can return to work or school after about a week and should see most of the swelling go down about three to four weeks after surgery. If you’re interested in this surgery for your child, Dr. Brenman recommends having it performed during the summer break.
