Am I a Candidate for a Facelift?

Over time, our skin loses collagen and elastin, proteins that help keep it firm and resilient. As a result, skin and underlying structures begin to sag. You can reverse signs of aging and lift sagging skin with a facelift. While you have many non-surgical options to address early signs of aging, for significant loose skin and deep lines, a facelift remains the gold standard of treatment.

What is a Facelift?

A facelift uses small incisions to lift and tighten the facial skin and underlying muscle and fat. At the Pennsylvania Centre for Plastic Surgery, Dr. Brenman performs a short scar facelift with a neck lift. This combination rejuvenates the entire lower face and restores the neck, chin, and jaw definition. A facelift pairs well with several other procedures, including a brow lift or eyelid lift to address the eye area.

Am I a Candidate for a Facelift? All candidates should understand what a facelift involves, what their recovery time will be like, and what results they can expect. Dr. Brenman will review this in detail during the surgical consultation. You may also make a good facelift candidate if you:
  • Have moderate to severe lines and wrinkles
  • Have moderate to severe sagging skin
  • Want to redefine your jawline and get rid of jowls
  • Have no significant health problems
  • Do not smoke or are prepared to quit
Any surgery puts stress on the body, so if you have any health problems that might affect the surgery or slow your healing, let Dr. Brenman know.

What is Facelift Surgery Like?

Dr. Brenman may use sedation or general anesthesia for your facelift. He will make an incision in the natural crease in front of your ear, then around the earlobe and behind the ear. This allows him to lift the skin and remove any excess. The muscle and fat layers are restored to their proper locations, and the skin is tightened. These small incisions leave minimal scarring that will fade to become almost invisible.

What is Recovery Like From a Facelift? Your head and neck will be bandaged for the first night after surgery, and you may have a surgical drain. Dr. Brenman may recommend a chin strap to wear for several weeks to support your results while you heal. Your sutures will dissolve on their own. Bruising and swelling will start to resolve after about two weeks, and many people return to work around this time

What Results Will I See With a Facelift?

You will see an overall more youthful appearance, with smoother skin, restored volume in the cheeks, and a sculpted jawline. By correcting the underlying layers as well as the skin, Dr. Brenman produces dramatic but natural-looking results and no trace of an overdone or permanently surprised appearance.
This visit was a pleasure! Dr. Brenman thoroughly explained my options and did seem rushed. He answered all my questions and made me comfortable with making my decision. Gina was friendly and helpful in facilitating scheduling etc. I feel confident in my choice.
