Am I a Candidate for an Eyelid Lift?

Age often takes its toll on the fragile skin around the eyes before anywhere else on the face. If your eye area makes you look older, you might be a good candidate for an eyelid lift. Also called blepharoplasty, an eyelid lift restores the appearance of the eye area to make you look more alert and youthful.

What is an Eyelid Lift?

Board-certified Dr. Scott Brenman performs upper and lower eyelid lift surgery at The Pennsylvania Centre for Plastic Surgery. Depending on your specific concerns, you may need an upper lift, lower lift, or both to achieve your goals.

Upper Eyelid Lift

During an upper eyelid lift, Dr. Brenman will make an incision hidden in the crease of the eyelid, then remove excess fat and skin. He will lift sagging skin and reposition the eyelid muscles to a more lifted, alert position. Some people even have enough drooping skin to obscure their vision, in which case the eyelid lift may get covered by insurance. A direct browlift to elevate the outer third of the eyebrow may be done through the same incision if indicated.

Lower Eyelid Lift

Dr. Brenman performs the lower eyelid lift through an incision hidden inside the lashes or in an eyelid crease. He will access the pads of fat that lead to a sagging, shadowed appearance under the eyes. Removing these fat pads and tightening the skin leads to a more rested, bright-eyed appearance with no more undereye bags.

Am I a Candidate for an Eyelid Lift?

The ideal candidate for an eyelid lift is in good health, does not smoke, and has reasonable expectations about their results. If you have drooping skin or undereye bags, you most likely make a good candidate for an eyelid lift. Discuss any health problems with Dr. Brenman to make sure they will not cause any issues.

What is Recovery Like From an Eyelid Lift?

You will experience some swelling and bruising after the procedure. This may take a week or more to resolve. Most people need five to seven days off from work to recover. You can use makeup to cover any remaining bruising when you return to work. You should be careful not to disturb the eye area too much while it heals. Wait till Dr. Brenman gives his approval to resume exercise, usually after four to six weeks.

What Results Will I See From My Eyelid Lift?

Swelling lasts three to six weeks, and after it has resolved, you can see your eyelid lift results. You will see your final results after six to twelve months. You will see the upper eyelid area look lifted, awake, and refreshed. The lower eyelid area will look smoother and firmer with no more undereye bags or shadows.

An eyelid lift works very well in combination with other procedures such as a facelift to provide complete facial rejuvenation. Other procedures commonly performed with an eyelid lift include a brow lift, Botox®, or dermal fillers.

Perfect – no pain during and two hours after anesthesia wore off, I had no discomfort whatsoever. Less than one week afterwards, all swelling & redness had gone away. Now my eyelids don’t throw a shadow on my vision. Excellent! Thank you Dr. Brenman.

This visit was a pleasure! Dr. Brenman thoroughly explained my options and did seem rushed. He answered all my questions and made me comfortable with making my decision. Gina was friendly and helpful in facilitating scheduling etc. I feel confident in my choice.
